New Product Opportunities Director – Global Franchise Strategy

Overview:

The New Product Opportunities Director - Franchise Strategy, will be responsible for determining a portfolio and investment strategy by identifying new product opportunities for the Oncology and Urology Franchises. A key responsibility will be to develop a franchise roadmap and build a robust pipeline that will ensure the business establishes the right cadence of innovation to maintain the continued growth and success of both the Oncology and Urology franchises. This includes understanding the clinical and competitive landscape, identifying key product concepts for both organic development and/or inorganic collaborations, developing a business case for each concept, identifying the value proposition of each product and how it folds into the broader context of each franchise's long-term strategy, and incubating new product ideas within existing and/or new markets and bring them through the DTI (decision-to-investigate) stage gate milestone. This position collaborates with and influences varying levels of internal and external personnel and requires a strong team-focused approach, direct interactions with customers, and public presentations. Strong business acumen and customer focus are essential to the success of this position as well as the ability to distill complex information from multiple sources into clear, compelling and actionable business cases. The New Product Opportunities Director - Franchise Strategy is expected to have broad knowledge of the healthcare landscape and commercialization of products, and familiarity with the clinical and technical aspects of the diagnostics business. The New Product Opportunities Director - Franchise Strategy will accomplish his/her tasks through interactions with a broad range of functions involved with the development and commercialization of Genomic Health's (GHI's) products including R&D, clinical, commercial, finance, regulatory, legal, and business development functions. This position will report to the VP/Sr. Director of Strategy and Product Management within the Business & Product Development organization.



RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

· Maximize the success of GHI's key franchises - Urology and Oncology - by defining a portfolio roadmap and developing a robust pipeline of products. Identify potential products/product concepts that are commercially viable, establish and validate business cases to support efficient and effective go/no go decisions related to new product development initiatives.
· Identify market opportunities, unmet customer needs and potential new products through various sources of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis including start-up incubators, customer advisory boards, customer market research, internal subject matter experts (editorial, production, marketing, sales, support, and technology), competitive product analysis, and other direct and indirect forms of customer/market feedback
· Assess the competitive landscape with a keen interest in understanding the clinical application for the test(s) and how it affects treatment pathways, as well as the technical nuances of various platform offerings to determine ease of adoption and/or limitations.
· Drive cross-functional work and ensure organizational alignment in support of the successful development and launch of new products. This will require close collaboration with fellow product and platform colleagues, as well as marketing, sales, finance, managed care, business development, clinical, and regulatory
· Provide vision and leadership in long-range company planning.
· Seek to continuously improve our methods and approaches used to identify opportunities, as well as develop, deliver, and launch new products
· Possess exceptional interpersonal skills including communication, persuasion, and negotiation, as well as collaboration and team building, to foster co-operative and productive relationships both internally and externally
· Exhibit an ability learn quickly, an inherent curiosity, and an ability to think both critically and creatively in order to develop and deliver commercially successful new product offerings
· Be highly commercial in mindset and possess sound judgement—able to spot opportunities and quickly capitalize on them—with a strong financial and analytical acumen; inclination to think in terms of new business opportunities / models, cost/benefit analysis, and using a data-driven approach
· Blend business and technical expertise to most effectively represent new product initiatives and to internal/external stakeholders, as well as engage in meaningful dialogues with key stakeholders across the organization
· Provide strong organizational and planning skills; proven ability to manage and monitor multiple work-streams in parallel

QUALIFICATIONS:

· BS in Life Sciences or similar discipline with a general understanding of biology, diagnostics and medical devices. MBA strongly preferred.
· A minimum of 15 years of relevant industry experience with product development and/or commercialization including 7 years of lifecycle product management or P&L management experience in the diagnostic, Pharma, Life Sciences or medical device field. A minimum of 2 years' experience in a regulated devices environment (IVD or medical devices, IVD preferred)
· Self-starter with the demonstrated ability to generate and articulate a strong portfolio vision and strategy and carry it all the way to tactical planning and successful execution in a dynamic market place.
· Demonstrated history of identifying market opportunities and leading the development of commercially successful new products in existing and/or new markets
· Demonstrated ability to effectively distill a large amount of complex customer, clinical, market, and technical data from multiple sources into a clear value proposition and to articulate and communicate this value proposition to a range of customer and internal audiences.
· Demonstrated history of building alignment between product, technology and subject matters experts within an organization, as well as a demonstrated capacity of effectively interact with external stakeholders
· Demonstrated history of sound business judgment, analytical rigor, and disciplined product strategy decisions based on data-driven insights
· Demonstrated working knowledge of the academic publishing and/or adjacent market segments, key competitors, and related industry trends is strong preferred
· Must have proven ability to build relationships and work effectively as a leader and/or team member with cross-functional teams including R&D, clinical, operations, commercial, finance, legal, and business development.
· Must have demonstrated success in managing multiple stakeholders and resolving conflict within teams.
· Must have excellent communication skills including oral, written and presentation techniques.
· Able to integrate and apply feedback in a professional manner.
· Able to prioritize and drive to results with a high emphasis on quality.



DESIRED
· MS or PhD Life Sciences or similar discipline
· Strong knowledge and experience in the area of oncology or urology including external trends and issues in the global oncology and/or urology landscape
· Strong analytical skills with experience with financial modeling or data analysis skills. Ability to build and analyze financial models to forecast and track results
· Experience in a regulated market space including CLIA, FDA, CE
· Experience with development and commercialization of products outside the United States
· Experience with driving clinical adoption and reimbursement of value-based diagnostics through clinical and economic impact studies
· Experience with business development including in-licensing and external partnerships
· Experience with working in both the clinical environment (i.e HCPs) and the diagnostic lab environment (i.e testing laboratories)
