How to Make a Living as a Writer

Writers can either work part-time or full time, or while doing so, they can get a supplemental income or have a lucrative one. If you have reached the necessary skills and dedication, you can choose your career path.

The dream

I thought I’d become Steven King, writing two books every year. That would make everyone a bestseller. I would get busy signing books and would spend my nights hopping from one show to another for interviews. In my early years of writing, I wrote about anything that crossed my mind. If you aspire to be a poet, bestseller, or screenwriter, this is not the article for you; quit reading.

What I do

I am a freelance writer who deals with content writing. I have bagged several clients, and I spend my time writing blog posts, Emails, e-books, and newsletters. I am also a social media manager for a few clients and even register for the byline I got. Unfortunately do not own a website, but the progress is on.

I write about topics that get relevant to the businesses of the clients. I would browse on the interests of my clients’ customer base and jot topics on the questions and hopefully solve their problems.

Good Content writers demand

The demand for good content writers is close to infinity; it does not stop. The best writers are hard to find. There is a deficit for legal content writers as there are many lawyers with nothing on their websites. All industries and companies need writers.

The best and most efficient tool for marketing is content. Before anybody makes a purchase, people will look up the product online and read through the blogs and reviews.

How much a content writer makes

The answer to that question depends on a lot of variables. Most writers get comfortable with low-paying gigs. They select the easiest gigs for the weakest of pays to avoid stressing them while satisfying their needs and wants. Some writers may land deals with the biggest brands.

Whatever you make depends on your skills, your writing choice, and the amount of work you are willing to input.

Demographics and education

Almost anyone can become a writer. Nobody will care if you have a Masters’s in Journalism unless you want a publication in the New York Times. Nobody cares whether you are old or young, your skin color, or your country of origin.

You should also ask yourself if you can jot great content. You have to manifest both research and writing skills as content writing deserves to be straightforward, dynamic, and actionable. The best writers will turn a boring text into an enjoyable one.

How to get started

There are many paths to the career of writing. What you need to remember is to have thick skin. Here are some of the tips;

  • Show off your work
